The grammar reaches its first internal structure when orientation pairs with itself. The pairing is the holonic unfolding.

The chapter's thesis: the holonic unfolding is the rule of distinction. Where there is holonic unfolding, there is distinction-within-unity — one system holding two distinguishable states, producing the framework's first holon. Where there is no holonic unfolding, there is no distinction, and the grammar cannot tell anything from anything else. The holonic unfolding is what makes any subsequent grammatical operation possible.

§2.1 — The Holonic Unfolding at Depth

At depth two, 0 paired with itself reads as 00 — the pure holonic unfolding (Definitions 10 and 12).

Pre-pairing, orientation is the bare presence of substrate (depth one, 0). Two orientations stacked are not two separate things. Each orientation, by occurring, transforms the orienting system that produced it; the second is the first transformed by having occurred. What 00 holds is the relation between substrate-before-orientation and substrate-after-orientation. This relation is distinction-within-unity — one system, two distinguishable states, orientation unfolding toward itself. The framework's first holon.

The two states are distinct (the holonic unfolding has produced internal structure that did not exist at depth one) and unified (they are two readings of the same orientation, not two separate orientations encountered side by side). The unity is what the holonic unfolding holds; the distinction is what it introduces. Without unity, the two states would not stand in relation — they would be unrelated configurations. Without distinction, the two states would collapse to one — depth one.

Beyond the holonic unfolding, the cap at three permits one more depth: 000 = pure tension (§0.1), the closed triangle of three holonic unfoldings simultaneously present. Beyond that, extension only. The holonic unfolding is the second of three structural states of pure orientation and the first state at which any internal structure exists at all. The holonic unfolding is the rule that produces distinguishability in the grammar.

§2.2 — The Holonic Unfolding at Position

Part I §3 produces six edge-doors at scale 2. Of these, two carry O at both bookends — OCO and OAO: orientation at both bookends with a single non-O letter at the middle.

This is the holonic unfolding appearing in the positional register. OCO is orientation paired with itself across positions 1 and 3, with capacity (C) as the middle term; OAO is orientation paired with itself across positions 1 and 3, with actualization (A) as the middle term. The bookends carry the held substrate; the middle carries the distinct term that the holonic unfolding has produced.

A configuration with O at both bookends and any letter at the middle reads as “substrate is here, this thing is between them.“ The substrate-bookended structure is what tells the grammar that one orientation is the same orientation across two positions — that the configuration is held by orientation throughout, and what varies is the middle. The middle is distinct from the substrate; the bookends together hold the substrate's identity across the variation. This is the holonic unfolding's positional reading: substrate framing a non-substrate term across three positions, holding the variation as distinct-within-unity at the spatial scale.

§2.3 — The Two Readings Are One Holonic Unfolding

The holonic unfolding applies wherever “substrate around a single distinct term“ can be drawn. At depth, the configuration is 00 — substrate iterating against itself, the distinct term implicit in the transformation between the two occurrences. At position, the configuration is OCO or OAO — substrate at both bookends, distinct term explicit at the middle. Both readings carry the same structural fact, distinction-within-unity. The holonic unfolding is one rule; the registers are where it appears.

§2.4 — The Mathematical Nature of Distinction

The digit 2 carries the rule of the holonic unfolding (Postulate 1, Definition 10). This section reads 2's nature in the framework's mathematical content — not where 2's operator sits in M, which is the operator paper's work, but what 2 is as a mathematical primitive. As §0.6 framed it, what follows is the predicted resonance — arithmetic and grammar surfacing the same upstream structure — not a loose analogy and not a derivation of one from the other.

2 is the first prime. The first integer beyond identity (1) and substrate (0) that is irreducible — not expressible as a product of smaller positive integers other than 1 and itself. Irreducibility at the level of the integer is the same upstream fact as irreducibility at the level of the operator (Definition 14) read in the number register: the holonic unfolding cannot be decomposed into smaller holonic unfoldings, and the integer 2 cannot be decomposed into a product of smaller integers.

2 is the only even prime. The partition even/odd is the simplest non-trivial partition of the integers. That this partition has exactly one prime on its even side and all other primes on its odd side reads as the arithmetic signature of the holonic unfolding: a single holonic unfolding produces a single primary partition, and the prime that defines the partition is 2 itself. The grammar produces one holonic unfolding; the integers carry one even prime — the same structure in two registers.

2 produces the binary distinction. The pair {0, 1} is the minimal closed pair. Any binary distinction — true/false, on/off, yes/no, present/absent — reduces to two states distinguished and held in relation, which is the holonic unfolding. The binary is the universal substrate of computation and logic, and what makes it universal is that every distinction reduces to a chain of binary distinctions, each one an application of the holonic unfolding.

The nature of distinction in mathematics is that 2 is the smallest building block of irreducible operation, the defining marker of binary partition, and the universal alphabet of distinction-based structure. This is the math-side nature of Ω₂; the occupation is elsewhere.

§2.5 — The Stabilization

When the framework runs and the holonic unfolding becomes a reusable capability — when telling-this-from-that is available not only at the pre-stabilized configurations (00, OCO, OAO) but at any new configuration the grammar produces — the rule has stabilized. That stabilization is what makes the holonic unfolding an operator-ready capability.

The stabilized capability is the operator Ω₂. Its two sūtra-aspects: what it IS is the rule of the holonic unfolding, developed in §§2.1–2.4; what it DOES — the operative form — is the producing of distinction-within-unity wherever the holonic unfolding operates. The occupation of this operative form in the framework's mathematical content — its address in M at period 2, the algebraic content the iteration forces (C₂), the operations it performs across its mathematical domain — is the work of the operator paper that lives outside this book.

What this sūtra has established: the holonic unfolding is the grammatical rule of Distinction; the rule reads consistently across the depth and positional registers; and the mathematical nature of the integer 2 carries the same structural content. The rule is fully developed at the grammar level. The occupation lives elsewhere.

§2.6 — The Handoff

The holonic unfolding produces two distinguishable states. The grammar's next move asks what becomes available when the running continues past it.

At the depth register, beyond 00 lies 000 — pure tension, the closed triangle of three holonic unfoldings simultaneously present (§0.1). At the positional register, beyond two-letter occupancy lies three-letter occupancy — the trinity OOO, CCC, AAA (Part I §2) and the inner doors that use all three letters once (Part I §4). The grammar has crossed from two-state distinction into three-state structure.

What holds among three distinguishables simultaneously present is the next rule the grammar produces.

The Relation of Origin picks up at the trinity.
